Father Edward Flanagan
Born: July 13th, 1886 | Died: May 15th, 1948
Bio: Father Edward Flanagan made an astounding impact on the lives of children across the world. He was born in Ireland, and after college made his way to the United States. There he overcame frail health to become a priest. In 1913, he opened “The Workingman’s Hotel” in Omaha to aid homeless workers. Time after time, the men told Father Flanagan “it’s too late for me now, Father, if only someone had helped me when I was a boy.” This inspired Father Flanagan’s great mission to save the neglected boys of the city. He was not content to merely talk. His tireless efforts overcame great difficulty and built Boys Town, a place for abandoned youth. He became a renowned expert on child care and was invited to go overseas to assist countries torn by World War II to construct a program for child welfare. It was in Germany where Father Flanagan passed away. His compassion and determination continue to save children to this day.
